While 2015 was a great year which brought many memorable moments, the 2016 Nigeria football events which are about to unfold are sure to be some of the most memorable.
The past year brought about great football events like the FIFA U-17 World Cup (which Nigeria won), the CAF U-23 Nations Cup (which Nigeria won also), the FIFA Women’s world cup and 2018 world cup qualifiers.
The 2016 Nigeria football events you cannot miss out on include:
1. CHAN 2016: The first tournament of the year for the Super Eagles. The CHAN 2016 tourney begins on January 16 in Kigali, Rwanda, with Nigeria drawn in a group that also has Tunisia, Guinea and Niger. The competition features players based in the representing country’s local lagues.
2. 2017 AFCON double header vs Egypt: Nigeria face an uphill task against the Pharaohs of Egypt. Nigeria will host the first game in Kaduna on March 26 with the return match in Cairo just days later.
After two rounds of matches, Egypt leads the group, which also has Chad and Tanzania, on six points with Nigeria two points behind.
3. 2018 World cup qualifying draw: After defeating Swaziland to qualify for the next round of qualifying fixtures for the 2018 world cup, Nigerians keep their fingers crossed when the draws are made on June 24 in Cairo, Egypt.
Nigeria are not high on the latest FIFA ranking, and the Super Eagles could well be drawn against some of Africa’s top teams if the rankings do not improve.
4. 2016 Rio Olympics: Oghenekaro Etebo and co won the U-23 African Nations Cup in December 2015 which means the dream team will feature in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.
5. 2017 African Women’s Championship: 2015 was not a great year for Nigerian women football after the World Cup disaster and failure to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
The Super Falcons can redeem themselves when they they face either Senegal or Guinea in April for a place at the tournament proper in Cameroon.
