Do you think you already know
everything that you're afraid of? Sure, everyone shares some pretty
common fears: death, heights, spiders. But there are some terrifying
things in the world that you probably aren't aware of that will increase
this list.
Many bridges in the United States are likely unsafe to travel across.
This fact comes as a result of a number
of bridges that were surveyed in the US being listed as "fracture
critical." What this means is that the slightest break in a bridge's
structural integrity could cause the entire thing to collapse.
Definitely makes travelling along the overpass a little more
frightening.
Your child is more likely to be molested by somebody they know than a stranger.
A truly frightening fact to swallow, as
public schools predominantly teach the danger of strangers. In most
reported cases of rape or molestation, the perpetrator is usually
somebody that the victim knows. Becoming paranoid of the surrounding
world is that much easier now.
There are amoebas that are capable of devouring your brain.
Dwelling on what lies at the
microscopic level is often overlooked. But these vicious little
creatures should, at the very least, raise alarm. The Naegleria fowleri
can be contracted by swimming in lakes or drinking tap-water; they can
be found in the United States and United Kingdom.
If you live in Australia, you have one of the highest likelihoods of skin cancer.
It's estimated that two out of three
Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they're 70.
Sadly, no amount of SPF will reduce that statistic, since the island
continent doesn't rely on the ozone layer to reflect harmful UV rays.
Too much water can kill you.
While highly unlikely, it is possible
to consume too much water, to the point of killing yourself. This is the
result of a rare instance in which your body's cells have too much
water and burst. The most crucial substance to life is a double-edged
sword.
The world could lose all of its wheat.
A certain fungus known as Ug99 is
capable of infecting entire wheat crops. It is common already in many
African countries, and could spread to other parts of the world fairly
easily. Hard to believe a mold could have that much impact.
The amount of bacteria in your belly button is alarming.
While not as critical as the
brain-eating amoeba, the amount of bacteria found in the average
person's belly button totals to about 1,458. The bacteria even showed
signs of non-geographical restrictions, with some of the specimen's only
known prior locations being places the test subjects had never been.
The dead outnumber the living 15 to 1.
This fact shouldn't be that alarming or
surprising. But to those that are paranoid of a zombie apocalypse, you
should can be more afraid now, since you'll definitely be outnumbered.
Thankfully, this shouldn't be too big of a concern, although it's still
kind of creepy.
